Shouldn't we, as ever-hungry consumers, be able to pop open a coke and drink only what we really need (as if we really need a coke)?Ĭoca Cola aside, this slimming down trend has recently hit the bread aisle with a vengeance. I personally endorse the concept of moderation in relation to all food consumption (especially after the super-sized hangover we are nursing from the "go-go" 80s and 90s), but it does smack of something cynical and maybe a little infantilizing. The sacred Coke formula will remain the same, only the serving size will be slimmed down to 90 calories, thereby attracting consumers who are more comfortable having the beverage company set the calorie intake limits, rather than themselves. Most recently, beverage behemoth Coca Cola announced a new marketing strategy for Coke that will consist of selling the beverage in a "mini can" that will hold 7.5 ounces rather than the standard 12. Essentially it involves repackaging, reforming, or rethinking the typical serving size of food, and up selling by downsizing. It feeds on those individuals looking to lose weight, cut down on calories, or simply just consume far less than what they are accustomed. There is a trend that is pervasive in the rabid world of grocery marketing. ![]()
